The Outliers by Kimberly McCreight

Not as good as I thought it'd be! It started out quite boring but even when it wasn't as mind-numbingly painful to read it was ludicrous and quite hard to believe. I came into The Outliers with quite high expectations and to say I was disappointed with what I read would be an understatement. I'd rate it a 2.5/5.

I'll be honest, the beginning of The Outliers kind of bored me. It was slow and in between flashbacks was very cliché and illogical. Wylie’s friend Cassie has gone missing, her boyfriend (Jasper) turns up at Wylie’s house to go and pick their friend up. They’ve been told by Cassie herself not to tell any police or their parents. So Jasper and Wylie are to cross into different states with telling anybody? Sure why not. Wylie, a sufferer of agoraphobia who hasn’t left the house for several weeks, is told to go on a roadtrip? Again why not. After a little pep talk and a few deep breaths she’s all fine and dandy and ready to fly the nest. What's more, throughout the rest of the book she doesn't even think about her previous fear again. It's like it never existed!

Wylie’s brother has a crush on Cassie. We see him maybe twice and each time Cassie is brought up his clear jealousy of Jasper is shown. You’d think the two would tell him and let him tag along on their little adventure but no. He is left not knowing of the fact his crush is nowhere to be found. And we never hear from him again. Wylie doesn’t even spare a second to think about him. Caring sibling right?

After their long and frankly boring road trip, the pair finally arrive at where they think Cassie is supposed to be and from then on out the plot twists became worse and worse; completely confusing and entirely ridiculous. So much happened in the last quarter of the book and it became like a new novel. I actually cringed at times and had to pause to go over what had happened. It took me a while to get through this book and I didn’t really enjoy much of it. I would not be inclined to read the rest of the series if and when it gets published.

Despite my negative review y'all might still want to read The Outliers. If you would like a different opinion on this book then go check out LoveReading4Kids' book page for it to see other reviews (which are wholey more positive) and make up your mind. Just press the link here <~~ I got The Outliers from the publisher, Harper Collins Children's Books through LoveReading in exchange for an honest review and it came out on May 3rd (so this review is nearly three months late but better late than never right?).

Enjoy
